I have the crawl space from hell to encapsulate. The ground is covered with this awful stone that digs through your knees. The 42 550 was critical to my success. Why go through all that work of encapsulating and not take every effort to protect the vapor barrier from damage. I have 1800 feet of crawlspace floor and one third has a clearance of around 16 inches. Putting the 42 down first made it less nasty when I had to belly crawl on the floor to put the 12 mil vapor barrier up on the uneven brick foundation.

I was glad I added it to the project

I was glad I added it to the project, it seems of good quality. It made it a much cleaner job installing the silverback.

Pros:
  • Affordable
Cons:

Purchased 2 of these because my crawl space is divided by concrete and I have low spots on either side of the crawl space. Just got both hooked up and they are both working great.

This makes a nice cushion under the 20 mil vapor barrier we bought. I first tried to cut it with a box cutter, but the box cutter couldn't puncture the material. Then I got out a sharp pair of scissors and that worked great for cutting the pieces we needed. So, I think the felt will really protect vapor barrier from any sharp objects or stones. We pulled more than 50 rusty nails out of the dirt and I wanted to make sure that if we missed a nail we wouldn't have a hole in the vapor barrier.

Long story, short, but... Following my DIY crawlspace encapsulation job, we started noticing an odor in the house. At first it was just a whiff, but as time went on it got stronger and stronger. Smelled like cat pee and I was wondering if the previous owners had felines in the house. I called Larry at Crawlspace Concepts and he said the culprit was likely soil gas and that I should install a 88 mitigation fan and slide a bunch of perforated pipes under my new liner. I took his recommendations, installed the system and within 24 hours the smell was completely gone. With the fan and pipes it was another $350, and I had to pay a roofer $200 to install the vent on our steep roof.
