Felt550™ Has Two Significant Uses In A Crawl Space

    Puncture Strength

The Felt550™ is made from virgin Polypropylene and woven into an lightweight and extremely punture resistant material. There is no organic material used when making this product so it will naturally resist mold and mildew growth. In fact, the Felt550™ was designed and engineered to be in contact with water and the earth 100% of the time. Putting all of these features together makes it perfect to use under a crawl space liner or vapor barrier to protect it from sharp stones, rocks and othe debris.

    Soil Gas Mitigation

Crawl spaces are harsh environments and with that comes considerations in air quality. One of the most serious is Radon Gas, because it is a killer. The Felt 550™ plays an important roll in Radon Gas Mitigation. The Felt 550™ creates an air gap between the vapor barrier and the soil, enhancing the results of the active Radon fan(s). Allowing the fans(s) to keep a negative pressure on all parts of the crawl space floor and eliminating any "pockets" that seep the gas into the space.
The Felt 550™ also plays a key part in mitigating other soil gasses that cause odor. As we continue to do research on the best ways to fix the problems with air quality, energy loss and moisture levels we discover new problems and their solution. One of those new problems is soil gas odor(other than Radon Gas). This problem is not everywhere and it has nothing to do with our vapor barriers causing the smell (other plastics have been found to contribute depending on their makeup and additives). Like with Radon Gas, the Felt 550™ enhances the results of the fan to mitigate the odor.

I probably didn’t need to use Felt 550 under 20 mil silverback, but I’m happy I did. Since radon mitigation was critical and added storage space was needed it provided the most durable solution with additional protection from any rocks I missed. It did make it much cleaner to install the vapor barrier which is a real plus.

I bought this product due to having a lot of sharp rocks in the crawl space and I was worried about the vapor barrier getting punctured. I laid the product down and it well worth the money! It’s tough and will dull box blades pretty quick. Had to use a knife to puncture holes in the felt due to my garden staple last not poking through. Plus, I think it will help keep the VB clean when applying it. Only bad thing is that it cost a bunch to ship but I guess that is part of it since I’m in Oklahoma.

good cover for gravel in crawl space

    Cons:
This felt laid down quick and flat. We used gorilla duct tape to spot tack the seams so while we were crawling around we didn't pull the felt around. I'm so glad we spent the extra to put felt in the crawl space. It made putting the vapor barrier in so much cleaner and easy. The crawl space had rough gravel and the felt helped give an extra barrier between the gravel and our vapor barrier.

I have crushed rocks in my crawl space so I installed Felt 550 to protect the vapor barrier in that part of my crawl space where I mostly walk or do some work and it feels so much safer there that I would advise anybody to install it everywhere possible just to be on safe side.

    Under Vapor Barrier Felt

    Cons:
We just installed he product so we can't make any claims as to its effectiveness, durability or longevity. The major drawback to this felt is how slippery the vapor barrier is over the felt. The plastic and the installer glide over the felt like melting ice making it a nightmare to work with. The unexpected sliding tendency caused me to slip and fall a couple of times trying to stand from kneeling to walk across it. There is still a lot for me to do under the house and the slippery environment is going to make the rest of my work even harder. If I had realized the felt would end up being a drawback, I would not have completely removed the old vapor barrier all at once. I now am fighting the clock and increased humidity levels in the crawlspace. If I knew the felt and plastic together would make installation so frustrating, I wouldn't have bought the felt.
